Why our shelves cost more A melamine shelf takes 3–5 steps to build. Ours takes over 40. See the full side-by-side comparison all 40+ steps · load tests · PDF

Nearly every closet and shelving company sells a melamine or MDF shelf — a pressed engineered core with a printed surface glued on. It is fast and cheap to produce. We make a real shelf out of real wood, and that is where the price difference comes from.

Typical melamine / MDF shelf
3–5 steps to
manufacture

Cut the panel and band the front exposed edge.

  • Particle board or MDF core
  • Printed paper surface — not wood
  • Edgebanding that can chip, peel & delaminate
  • Swells permanently once water gets in
  • Sags under load and stays sagged
  • Hidden behind names like “Fiber Board” or “Engineered Wood”
  • Core of shelf bonded with formaldehyde resins
  • Life expectancy as little as 2–5 years (delaminating)
Lundia solid wood shelf
40+ steps to
manufacture

Cut, glue, surface, trim, route, sand and finish part by part.

  • Real solid Hardwood Maple and Premium White Pine
  • Real wood grain, all the way through
  • No edgebanding — the edge is the wood
  • Solid Wood holds up to water spills
  • Tested to hold as much as 500 lbs each
  • We list the actual forests our wood comes from — see the counties
  • Core of shelf made with solid wood
  • Life expectancy is Forever

Below is the actual process for one shelf, start to finish. We have used a 15" × 42" shelf as the example because the cut dimensions have to come from somewhere — but every depth and every width we make goes through this same sequence.

The melamine shelf

Cut & edge-band. Done.

  1. Start with an MDF or particle board panel that already has a melamine paper face applied — a flat color, or a printed imitation wood grain.
  2. Cut to length and width on a panel saw. (2–4 cuts)
  3. Edge-band the one exposed side of particle board with matching color or wood-grain tape.

That's it. No milling. No glue-up. No curing. No finishing. The "wood" you see is a photograph printed on paper, or simply colored paper fused to the particle board.

The Lundia solid wood shelf

Milled, glued, cured, finished.

  1. Take raw wood and mill it to 1" thick.
  2. Rip into strips roughly 2"–3" wide. (7+ cuts)
  3. Cross-cut each strip to length, approximately 44". (7 cuts)
  4. Align the strips for wood grain match, and reverse-grain them for glue strength.
  5. Glue the strips together. (7–8 pieces)
  6. Clamp the rough 17" × 44" panel and cure until the glue dries.
  7. Run through the surfacer at least 4 times — 2 per side — to a smooth 3/4" finished thickness. (4 passes)
  8. Cut to width, just under 15".
  9. Cut to length, 42".
  10. Notch each corner. (4 cuts)
  11. Special-cut a 3/16" horizontal groove in each end to accept the end channels. (2 cuts)
  12. Cut metal end channels from 12' stock to the shelf depth.
  13. Mill the ends of those channels so they become the supports that carry the shelf in the upright channels. (4 cuts)
  14. Light prep sanding, both sides. (2 passes)
  15. Apply the initial stain with a low-VOC water-based sealer coat. (2 processes)
  16. Light sanding again, both sides.
  17. Apply the finish coat of low-VOC water-based lacquer.
  18. Cure under controlled temperature.
  19. Attach the metal end channels to both ends. (2 processes)

Approximately 42 individual operations — and there is no shortcut through any of them. Solid wood is genuinely difficult to work with, which is exactly why we are the only US source for it.

Step counts are approximate and shown for a single 15" × 42" shelf.

Over 500 lbs held by a 24" wide Lundia shelf with no measurable deflection
Since 1957 Built in the USA, time tested quality
9 Finish Options Unfinished, Clear, 5 stains or 2 paint colors

A shelf you buy once and keep for decades costs less than a shelf you replace every few years — and used Lundia still resells on eBay, which is not something anyone can say about a melamine panel.
